Combatting COVID-19 While Autoimmune

I'm Autoimmune. How do I handle COVID-19?

The world has paused due to the outbreak and rapid spread of COVID-19. We are all feeling the stress, uncertainty, and fear during this unusual time. While we may all wonder if we are powerless or have zero control over this situation, there are things you can do at home to protect your immune system and your emotional wellbeing.

First, if you are autoimmune, PLEASE, take this seriously. Even if you “just have Celiac” you are immunocompromised. Hear me loud and clear-it’s not worth it for you to put yourself at risk, and like it or not you MUST take extra precautions. If you are not autoimmune, you may still benefit from my advice for the immunocompromised.

Stay Home

If you are autoimmune you are more likely than others to catch corona due to your compromised immune system. I know it sucks. I know when we’re autoimmune sometimes we just want to feel “normal.” This is one of those times where we have to acknowledge hey this is what’s going on in my body. I need to take extra precautions, more so than my friends, to take care of myself. My immune system is not like others.

The best way to protect yourself is to abide by social distancing guidelines and stay home. If you live in an apartment complex use sanitizing wipes if you ever leave your building.

Don’t Be Ashamed to Set Boundaries

It’s okay to ask a friend who has a stronger immune system to do a grocery run for you, to ask those you come in contact with to not shake your hand, etc. Again, you are immunocompromised! Plain and simple. You need to adhere to the recommended CDC guidelines more than most.

Follow Saniziataion Guidelines

If you do go for a wellness walk and get some fresh air (which I encourage if done safely) only walk in areas that are not too crowded with people. Avoid walking with more than one or two people. Do not touch your face and wash your hands immediately when you get home.

Up Your Self-Care

Do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself. Set your alarm an hour later. Meditate. Take a bath. Read a book you love. FaceTime a dear friend. Watch a funny episode of a show you love. Whatever you do to take care of yourself, do MORE right now. I’ll be doing a whole separate blog post on self-care during this time so stay tuned!
