Nutrition Tips During the Pandemic

Food and proper nutrition always have the ability to heal and prevent disease. Now more than ever it is essential to take care of ourselves nutritionally. A healthy diet can support our immune system during the worldwide spread of COVID-19. You might find yourself lost with what to cook or how to maximize your grocery runs. Read on for some nutrition tips during the quarantine!

Eat Lots of Vegetables!

I know you know this but vegetables provide the nutrients we need! Vegetables also support a healthy gut flora, where 70-90% of our immune system lies. Aim to eat three to six servings of vegetables a day, especially loading up on your cruciferous leafy green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, or kale.

Being at home so often (all the time!) brings our relationship with food to the surface. Some of us might find ourselves overeating while others find themselves not eating enough. Whatever end of the spectrum you fall on, now is the time to nourish your body.

Freeze Your Vegetables and Fruit

Between limited grocery runs and readily available fresh produce, cooking exactly what we want presents a challenge during quarantine! Eating as many servings of vegetables a day and 1-2 servings of fruit are needed now more than ever!

When you do have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, freeze the half of the ones that you can save for later. Great fruit and vegetables to freeze include bananas, berries, spinach, kale, broccoli, or cauliflower.

Use a High-Quality Protein Powder

Now that you have plenty of frozen vegetables and fruit, get all the servings you need in one meal by making smoothies. Remember, you want the majority of your smoothie to be vegetables. You can read how I create my smoothies here.

With the uncertainty surrounding food availability, having a quality protein or collagen powder handy will be helpful if you cannot find the protein you desire.

I prefer Vital Protein Collagen Peptides and this Paleo Protein Powder. Collagen peptides do not have a taste, so if you are not in the mood for a smoothie you can add a scoop to your morning coffee to get the protein you need for the day!

Hydrate

Drink up! Even though you are inside and working from home your body still needs to hydrate. Water can improve your energy levels, mood, prevent headaches, and help flush unwanted toxins out of your body.

Incorporate Herbs and Spices

Immune-boosting herbs and spices are perfect during quarantine! My favorites- turmeric and ginger. Turmeric is the superwoman of antiinflammatory herbs while ginger is amazing for digestion. I take daily turmeric capsules or add it as a spice to your cooking. You can eat fresh ginger or use it in the powdered form as well.

Do the Best You Can!

Give yourself an EXTRA dose of grace and self-love during this time. Feeling motivated to try out a Whole-30 challenge? Great! Doing the best you can with what’s in your fridge? Great! Having tons of greens and then a yummy dessert? Great!

My larger point is now is not the time to put pressure on yourself to be “doing” something huge. Now is not the time where you have to learn a new language, how to cook a souffle, or Marie Condo your entire house. Be sure to check out my quarantine self-care planner to learn how to make self-care SIMPLE.
